Engaging under-represented students: diversity training from Generating Genius
Generating Genius is an education charity that has successfully enabled inner-city pupils from state schools to gain places in Russell Group universities. It has developed a world-class methodology and e-mentoring service, which it has now developed into a training programme.
Does your HE institution need to improve its understanding of how best to engage under-represented students?
Generating Genius is running a series of free training sessions for Widening Participation departments, Outreach Officers and Admissions Tutors, to help them reach target groups and improve the quality of their outreach activities and programmes. The bespoke one day training workshops will include:
1. How to identify academic talent in under-represented communities
2. The creation of out-of-school programmes to develop and enhance talented students
3. How to encourage students to aspire to study at top-tier universities and how to help them if they decide to apply
4. How to develop a research and evaluation model that can track the effectiveness of interventions that are used.
Delegates will also receive a Good Practice Guide that outlines the main approaches that may be adopted by academic departments or WP offices.
A maximum of 9 workshops will be held. If you are interested in either hosting a workshop at your institution or attending as a delegate, please email generatinggenius@yahoo.co.uk with a cc to charlotte.forder@soton.ac.uk and the Generating Genius team will contact you.
