EPS Grand Challenge off to a great start!
On Monday 18th June, a full cohort of students from the universities of Birmingham and Aston came together for the first time, ready to take on 2012’s Grand Challenge.
Rebecca Brenon, BSc Maths graduate, enjoying the Creativity & Innovation ideas-generation workshop on Friday 22nd June.
Throughout this first week the group of 47 has been allocated into 6 teams, ready to take on the challenges issued by IBM and Atkins, surrounding Birmingham issues – and supported by Birmingham City Council and Birmingham Science Park. Before starting their projects proper, the students have had workshops on team building, leadership, problem solving & decision making, multi-faceted optimisation, communication skills, project & time management, intellectual property and creativity & innovation. Armed with these new-found (or newly-reinforced) skills the teams will, for the next 3 weeks, develop their ideas and present them on Friday 13th July.
Jenny Illingsworth, Grand Challenge coordinator and module leader, commented, “There is so much energy; the students are raring to go and have gelled into their teams really well. They’re wonderfully enthusiastic and the mixture of Aston and Birmingham students gives an even better variety and outlook than we could have expected. I can’t wait to see how their ideas develop over the next 3 weeks.”
