The good practice being offered to adopters identified in the transition to STEM project is in the setting up of Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) schemes. The SW HE STEM project is identifying a range of provision both face to face and on-line, and is well placed to advise and guide adopters to select and work with a model that suits their context. It is recognised that the support of higher level student mentors for new first year students has significant benefits both academically and socially. PAL leaders can use their experience to provide reassurance and guide students through difficult aspects of their course providing first year students with a more effective transition to university life and study.
- Adopters will be supported in identifying the PAL model required to suit their context and need.
- Staff and programme(s) will be identified to pilot PAL 2012-13.
- Work with adopting programme(s) to set up PAL Leader selection process, provide staff development, disseminate work at the adopting HEI (managed by adopting HEI) around Easter/early summer 2012
- Evaluation meeting arranged by custodian HEI May 2012. This meeting will evaluate the processes, and ensure implementation for the autumn term is in place. It will also provide an opportunity for a writing retreat to support the case study writing.
- Collaboration with two external HEI "critical friends" with a view to their also adopting the practice being transferred
- Production of a case study for the HE STEM website by end May 2012
There is evidence that students feel a better sense of belonging and settle in more quickly with improved retention and progression where their social and academic integration has been nurtured in this way. PAL leaders offer sustained support throughout the year particularly at critical times (settling in, preparation for assignments, revision). Students applying to become PAL leaders themselves often cite the good experience they had and that they want to pass this on to others.
