To develop sustainable measures to help students to gain both confidence and skills in mathematics, which would run alongside existing mathematics provision in the College and be offered to all students coming from non-A level backgrounds (e.g. via Access courses).
We want to develop postgraduates drawn from across the College to act as tutors; we would through in house training from experienced teaching fellows and lecturers and with the direct involvement of our University Education Enhancement unit develop the skills of our postgraduate tutors enabling them to teach/support effectively in a tutorial setting working to the specific student needs being mindful of the need to develop confidence.
The importance of working with teaching staff delivering core maths and maths related modules will be paramount in our approach to ensure that appropriate maths support for modules is covered before these skills are required for the module in question. In this way the development of mathematical skills will be integrated into the existing teaching enabling students from non-typical backgrounds not to be held back across the curriculum because of limited mathematical understanding.
