Industry visits for physics students, Glamorgan
Improve students’ commercial and industrial awareness and understanding of the applications of physics/space science.
Build links with local/regional employers of STEM graduates (e.g. Terradat, EMU, Wessex Archaeology) and potential research collaborators (e.g. RAL, Jodrell Bank).
Visits to 5 key partners;
Rutherford Appleton Lab – particle physics, space science research; visitor specialists for outreach/education; UK Space Agency head office.
Jodrell Bank radio observatory – radio astronomy, research; visitor centre for outreach/education.
Terradat, Cardiff – exploration geophysics.
Wessex Archaeology – geophysics, archaeology.
EMU, Portsmouth – marine and terrestrial geophysics.
Students will be exposed to the industrial importance of STEM subjects in a range of high technology settings.
Increased awareness of the job opportunities for scientists in industry and education, which should improve engagement with the degree.
New links with commercial/industrial partners will hopefully open up potential opportunities for future collaborations, thus benefitting staff as well as students in the long run.
