Enhancing the second year experience for undergraduate mathematicians - Exeter
See http://www.hestem.ac.uk/activity/enhancing-second-year-experience-undergraduate-mathematicians for details of the original project.
The Transition from first year mathematics to second year is big, specific areas of the curriculum such as analysis and proof and the need to develop mathematical techniques to cope with these areas and develop the mathematical fluency needed to work effectively can be real challenges for student and teacher alike. Students come to university inspired and eager to learn mathematics and can be demotivated when they hit problems or the unfamiliar in the second year, we very much want to change this.
The aim is to develop an ethos and practical strategies which will use the students themselves as a resource, students know where there are bottlenecks and difficulties are with specific aspects of the programme at level 2 and this is where both students and staff can work together to improve the teaching and learning experience of undergraduate mathematicians in this year group.
We want to raise student’s enthusiasm, improve engagement and satisfaction with modules by being both collaborative and responsive to student’s needs. We want to make sure the student population are well represented and would want to encourage those who have struggled with the modules and well as those who were confident about second year content to be involved as interns in this project.
