Abstract
The purpose of this project is to research into the current STEM FD offerings in building services engineering and low carbon technologies. Building on extensive employer networks and a good track record for employer engagement we feel we are in a strong position to design and deliver an employer led STEM Foundation degree and create a model for FD creation which can be replicated across all STEM subject areas to address skills gaps within workforces. The project will be a two phase project focussing on: market research – what is available in terms of FD delivery, what has a good take up vs. poor take up and reasons for these; design and development of a STEM FD which there is a clear market demand for. A number of lead companies will be established to work with the HEI and FE college to improve upon the current offerings and develop a FD in building services with environmental technologies in collaboration with the sector -designed to meet the needs of individual learners and employers within the low carbon technologies sectors which have been identified as a lead priority by the RDA. The award will focus on workforce development, be flexible in content and delivery mode and will make use of a significant element of work-based and blended e learning so improving upon the efficiency and applicability of the HE experience to current working practices.
Project Aims

~ Work closely and collectively with the lead employer, Sector Skills Councils and the renewables institute to define the STEM specific work-based modules of a Foundation Degree framework.

~ Adapt the Summit Skills framework of modules to the needs and requirements of regional employers

~ Develop online case studies and resources packs for potential employers and ambassadors of work based learning

~ Raise awareness of Foundation Degrees and promote the SummitSkills FD framework to employers.
