Abstract
Established in 2007 by Careers Wales Cardiff and Vale Discover! Saturday Clubs are a science-based activity designed to offer Year 9 girls a hands-on insight into careers relating to science, technology, construction and engineering. Participants are introduced to a different ‘theme’ every week so offering the girls an insight into a wide range of occupations in areas where women are under-represented.
Project Aims

To  help build a nationwide network of Discover! Clubs across Wales by extending coverage to HEIs in  North Wales.

Project Objectives

To provide entertaining hands on educational activities aimed at enthusing Year 9 girls to consider taking STEM subject options for GCSE and beyond. Scientific, technological and engineering content of the activities will be emphasised and dialogue between pupils and presenters will be encouraged throughout the activities. Career opportunities and information will be on hand and the participants encouraged to take advantage of that information.

To make available continuous support from a female undergraduate mentor throughout the programme.

Project Outputs

Saturday morning sessions to run for six weeks. Sessions to be attended by 20/25 Year 9 girls.

Project Outcomes

Hopefully most of the participants will have enjoyed the activities and will give serious thought to their STEM options with further regard to consider STEM subjects for College, University and future careers.

The project is designed to raise participants' aspirations and broaden their horizons and give them the confidence to consider a STEM related career, especially with the contact of female mentors and role models. It will hopefully generate a new confidence in themselves and an interest in STEM subjects and a greater interest in the world at large.
